Navigating VET Costs in Australia: A Quick Guide for International Students

When it comes to studying overseas in Australia, international students have many options to pursue their dream careers. Some choose to pursue a university degree, while others take ELICOS courses to boost their English skills. Many opt for vocational education and training (VET) instead.

VET training is a very popular pathway for students looking to jump straight into the workforce or build foundational skills to eventually enrol in a university course down the road.

What is VET and why pursue one?

VET focuses on hands-on and practical with less emphasis on theoretical knowledge. This means after graduation from your VET course, you are immediately employable and get into work in your chosen industry.

VET programmes can cover a spectrum of industries from healthcare and hospitality to IT and trades. This allows students to enter a spectrum of exciting careers through the route of professional training instead of traditional learning such as coursework or research.

VET qualifications range from Certificates I-IV, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and even Graduate Certificates and Diplomas. Plus, upon completion of your VET course, you will also be able to use your certificate or qualification to apply for higher education pathways such as pursuing a bachelor’s degree from an Australian university.

What are the costs for international students?

For international students, the costs of VET programs are generally higher compare to domestic students. The fees for international students can range from:

  • Certificates I-IV: These courses teach you industry-specific skills plus basic competency training and knowledge in communication, literacy and numeracy. The course can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. The fees can range from AU$6,000 to AU$18,000 per year.

  • Diploma and Advanced Diploma: These are full-time courses that will prepare students in various industries that could including nursing, ageing support, restaurant manager, accounting and so on. Diplomas typically last between 1.5 years to 2 years and are more intensive than a certificate. Diploma fees for international students can range from AU$8,000 to AU$25,000 per year, and Advanced Diploma fees can range from AU$10,000 to AU$30,000 per year.

  • Vocational Graduate Certificate/Diploma: Students will be able to boost their skills and knowledge through graduate courses that are specific to their industry to access greater career opportunities in their chosen field. The graduate diploma can take anywhere from 1 to 2 years to complete. Fees can range from AUD$4,000 and $22,000 per year.

Keep in mind that costs can vary based on the institution, program, and duration. For instance, a Certificate IV in Accounting on the Gold Coast might cost around AU$6,000, while a full diploma in Canberra could be AU$7,000, and an advanced diploma might go up to AU$26,000.

Generally, the longer and more intensive the program, the higher the cost. It’s important to choose a course that aligns with your career goals. If you want the flexibility to work while studying, a diploma could be a great option.

Additional costs to consider

There are some additional costs that you should consider:

  • Materials and Equipment: Many VET courses, particularly those in trades and healthcare, require specific tools, uniforms, or equipment. These costs can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the course.

  • Student Services Fees: Some institutions charge additional fees for access to student support services, which may include career counselling, tutoring, or IT services.

  • Living Expenses: For international students, it’s essential to factor in the cost of living in Australia, which can include accommodation, food, transportation, and other everyday expenses. The Australian government estimates international students need around AU$21,000 per year for living expenses.

How to reduce costs?

  • Scholarships: Some institutions offer scholarships to VET students, though they are more common for university-level education. However, it’s worth researching as some industry-specific scholarships may be available.

  • Payment Plans: Many institutions offer payment plans that allow you to pay your tuition in instalments rather than upfront.

  • Work While Studying: International students in Australia on a student visa are typically allowed to work part-time while studying, which can help cover some living expenses. Read more on this blog about working on an Australian student visa.
